John Frusciante Makes Couples Rethink Normal

Comic John Frusciante makes couples take a long, hard look at themselves and their relationships whether they like it or not in Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus Live!

Sharing humorous stories about his own love life, Frusciante boldly joked about the fundamental differences between men and women, or Martians and Venusians as it were.

Whether he talked about the bloom of first love, the hazards of moving in together, the joys of marriage, or sex in general, Frusciante says the whole show can be summed up in four words, “less nagging, more shagging.”

Always honest, sometimes bawdy, and ever true to the source material, Frusciante seemed to get one of three reactions from the crowd: raised eyebrows, nervous snickering or all-out laughter. Regardless, it was evident that the tales he spun were recognizable to anyone who has ever been in a relationship.

The show also showcases videos featuring Dr. John Gray, author of the classic relationship advice book the show is based on. Whether they realized it or not, everyone at Veterans Memorial Auditorium was in for a humorous treat, and an unexpected dose of couples therapy.

Mars and Venus makes for a fun date night, but couples need to go into the show with an open mind, ready to laugh at themselves and their mate. Otherwise, they might find themselves in the predicament the couple seated in front of my wife and I did.

All through the show, we’d been laughing at anecdotes that could easily have starred my wife and I. Then at intermission, the older lady in front of us turned around and asked, “How long have you two been married?”

“Nearly fifteen years,” my wife answered.

“Well, apparently that isn’t long enough to no longer find this funny,” she said, and spun back around in her seat.

Jeez lady, there’s a bar in back, I thought. Go help yourself and relax! At least her husband still found humor in the show.

But sadly, she wasn’t alone in finding that the show’s thematic material hit  a little too close to home. The couple seated beside us had had enough too, never having laughed during the show, as they left at intermission never to return.

Don’t let their attitudes dissuade you from going to the show when it gets to your town, however. If you’re really looking to improve your relationship, and want to laugh a lot along the way, Mars and Venus is generally an easy pill to swallow that will make you think, and hopefully improve the way you and your significant other communicate going forward.
