When I talk to students contemplating a career in journalism, the first thing I tell them is that they need to look for great internships to kick start their career. When I was still a j-school student at the University of Cincinnati, internships were built into our curriculum, but that’s not always the case, depending where you go to university. Still, whether or not internships are mandatory for graduation, working as an intern is a smart idea because internships provide real world experience, help students network with professionals, and sharpen your focus when it comes to picking an area of expertise. November is here and autumn has finally arrived in Texas. For a while now, I have wondered if we would ever see the trees change color or the temperatures drop. I lived here before, years ago, but apparently I’d forgotten just how long summer lasts in Dallas. Life in New England spoiled me with its bounty of fall foliage, and I find that I really miss it now, not to mention life by the sea. Hi Everyone,

I always feel like autumn never officially starts until October, when the temperatures finally drop and the evenings are cool, pumpkins make their appearance everywhere, including my oven, and apples are ripe for harvesting. But it also means that summer fun is over and it is time to settle into a stricter writing routine. Every writer has his or her own strategy. Some are planners, others like to see where their writing takes them, and then some, like myself, plan a loose outline so they know where the story is headed, yet are open to the possibilities.
